In April 2024, we officially began working with Paint, along with a few other varieties.
The Lore
Paint is a relatively newer variety, first accepted in 2018, and has quickly become one of the most popular colors. Despite its popularity, finding quality Paints and Dominant Whites remains a significant challenge especially when concerning Paint lines without blue genetics and khaki leakage.
Removing these issues has always been our goal since we first started working with Paint and it may take us many years before we are able to fully keep a line of "clean" Paints. Though progress has been progressing.
Spots
Paints with large, crisp spots are ideal. The goal is for them to resemble the classic black and white cow print. In fact, that resemblance is what originally drew me to work with Paints—I’ve always loved cow print (I even own several pairs of cow print pants!).
Because of that, we focus on breeding for bold, well defined spots. Although preferences can vary between judges in the showroom, Paints with large spots are preferred as written in the Bantam Standard.
Recessive Genetics
Our pen has been extensively tested for recessive white and lavender. All of our breeders have either tested clean for both genes or are derived from our clean breeders.
Recessive white and lavender frequently turn up in varieties where they don’t belong, so making sure our birds are genuinely clean is a top priority at Her Chickies.
However, like many other breeders, we are still working to eliminate any traces of khaki leakage.
We have also yet to experience any Blue or Splash offspring from our Paint pen and have not had a single "partridge" offspring since removing suspected females and cocks in early 2025.

Be careful when adding Black Silkies with silver leakage to your Paint pen—you may just be introducing leakage.
