In April 2024, we started officially working with White (along with a few other varieties). Though, disclaimer, our White Silkies are from Paint breeding--otherwise known as Dominant White.
Mixed Bag
White Silkies require exceptional care and consistent upkeep to maintain their pristine appearance. Without regular attention, their feathers can quickly become discolored. Grass stains can leave a green tint, dirt and sun exposure can cause yellowing, and cecal droppings can lead to brown or black stains.
Despite the challenges, there is a great sense of satisfaction in seeing a clean White Silkie. At this point, the bird may resemble a fluffy cotton ball more than a chicken. ꉂ (´∀`)ʱªʱªʱª White also tends to accentuate the contours and shadows of their wings, cushion, and crest, making their features appear more pronounced.
Silver and Gold
Birds can be classified as either silver-based or gold-based, with each base influencing the expression of pigments in different ways. Silver inhibits the expression of pheomelanin, which is responsible for yellow and red tones, while gold enhances the expression of pheomelanin, often resulting in richer, warmer colors. This difference in base color can also affect the appearance of certain patterns or ground colors in the plumage.
For White Silkies, a silver base is generally considered more ideal, as it tends to produce a cleaner, brighter white. However, gold-based birds can produce exceptional White Silkies as well.
At Her Chickies, we primarily work with gold bases and rarely use silver bases.
