Her Chickies is primarily run by me, Josie, with the (sometimes) support of my partner, Kalvin.
While I’m evaluating birds, he’s loitering in the background. While I’m cooking up eggs and mixing feed, he’s off at work, slaving away. While I’m bathing the chooks, he’s busy chasing our Ameraucana rooster. Needless to say, without Kalvin, I’d be managing just fine. (Kidding—of course!)
Our journey into chicken keeping was anything but smooth—we jumped in headfirst with no research and quickly found ourselves facing one challenge after another. But having grown up with chickens my entire life and having been born with a stubborn head, each obstacle was just another step in the learning process. Almost every issue that chicken keepers have encountered, we’ve faced firsthand. It has honestly been an incredibly humbling experience, filled with lessons that have only deepened our love for these birds.
In January 2024, I decided to create JK Chickies—a name that would truly reflect both mine and Kalvin’s sentiments about chickens. At the time, the journey had started to feel a bit lonely, and I longed to connect with like-minded individuals who shared my passion. I wanted to find people who saw their birds as more than just livestock, who cherished them as pets while also believing in the importance of improving the breed. Most of all, I wanted to build a community that valued the happiness and health of their chickens above greed and profit.
I later changed JK Chickies to Her Chickies in December 2024 for a multitude of reasons—mainly because I felt the original name was too simple and didn’t fully capture what I wanted it to. Her Chickies feels so much more personal and meaningful to me. It’s become more of a reflection of my journey, my love for these birds, and the immense joy I’ve had with them.
