This page will go into detail about how we package up our eggs, chicks and birds.
There are many different methods for shipping hatching eggs, and what works best for some may not work for others. The shipping process can be especially rough on eggs, as they are shaken and jostled around. It’s common for shipped hatching eggs to have development rates anywhere from 0% to 100%, which is why most breeders will never guarantee hatch rates.
The only thing I can do as a breeder is package the eggs securely and test for fertility monthly to ensure it is higher than 70%. We want the very best results after all!
At Her Chickies, we only ship via USPS and offer Priority and Express shipping. Both typically arrive in the same time frame within 1 to 3 business days and automatically come with up to $100 insurance, but there's a big difference between the two:
We also offer optional add-ons for your hatching eggs. These add-ons are optional and are in addition to the cost of your order.
Before we even package the eggs, we carefully inspect each one with and without a candler. We will never intentionally send eggs with cracks, defective air sacs, thin shells, misshapen forms, double yolks, from new layers, overly soiled shells, and eggs older than 3 days.
We carefully cushion our eggs with honeycomb packaging paper and place them snugly into a carton. We add more honeycomb paper around the eggs and wrap the carton in thick paper (purely ornamental) with ribbon or string. The box is filled with pine shavings and more honeycomb paper for extra cushioning. Finally, we tuck more pine shavings around and on top of the carton before sealing and taping the box securely.
As you may know from above, we ensure that each egg is of the utmost quality for the best results. This commitment extends to our hatching eggs, chicks, and birds that are picked up and delivered locally.
We try to ensure that all of our chicks and birds are thriving before leaving the farm (eating, drinking and pooping with no signs of illness). In many cases, we quarantine and isolate birds we are rehoming to better monitor them. However, our own process should not impede on yours. We always recommend quarantining new additions.
There is no cost for pick up, but a non-refundable fee applies for local delivery. Payment for local delivery must be made in advance. Local delivery in the Olivehurst area is $10, while the Sacramento area delivery fee is $25. An adult must be present at the delivery location to receive the eggs and live birds.
At Her Chickies, we take great care in packaging our eggs for pick up and local delivery, using honeycomb packaging paper to cushion them inside an egg carton. The carton is then tied with ribbon or string. When transporting, we ensure the eggs are securely placed in a safe spot in the vehicle to prevent any jostling.
For the best results, we recommend pick up and delivery, as it minimizes the risk of the eggs being shaken during transit.
We offer three different sized Chick Boxes:
I provide adequate packaging for chicklets to grow outs at no extra cost, however, additional Chick Boxes are additional. Small is $5, Medium is $6 and Large is $8.
We also carry Adult Boxes for juveniles and adults. These are not included and must be requested. Otherwise, birds are placed into carriers, and you must bring your own.
All of our boxes include pine shavings, but additional shavings can be added in for $1 more. Wet feed can also be added to the box for $1 and 12-hour heat packs for chicks can be added for $3. Heat packs must be requested at least 6 hours in advance.
